Very little. Panels have no moving parts and rain does most of the cleaning on a pitched roof — that's why they carry 25-year performance warranties. The inverter is the workhorse and typically gets replaced once in the panels' lifetime (modern ones carry 10-year warranties). Your monitoring app makes any fault obvious. Honest answer: a standard grid-tied solar system switches off in a power cut — it's a legal safety requirement. If backup matters to you, a battery system can be designed to keep essential circuits running (fridge, lights, Wi-Fi); tell us at the design stage and we'll build it in. Without backup wiring, your battery simply pauses with the grid.

You can absolutely add one later — retrofit batteries are a routine job and also 0% VAT. Doing it at install time is usually cheaper (one visit, one commissioning, an inverter chosen for it), which is why most of our systems include a battery from day one. If budget is tight, we'll design the solar so a battery slots in cleanly later.

Panels installed by an MCS-accredited installer are considered a permanent home improvement, and most insurers simply ask you to tell them so buildings cover reflects the new value. We provide all the certification your insurer could ask for. It's worth a quick call to your insurer after installation — premiums are rarely affected.

The system stays with the roof and transfers to the new owner — along with the remaining panel and battery warranties and the MCS certificate, which we register properly for exactly this reason. A certified, well-documented solar and battery system is a genuine selling point rather than a complication.
