Most battery "reviews" online come from people who've never lifted one onto a bracket. We install the Fox ESS EP12 more than any other battery, so this is the working view: what it's like to own, what the numbers mean, and — because no product suits everyone — when we steer customers to something else.

What it is

• Capacity: ~11.5 kWh usable per unit — genuinely a full evening-and-night of typical family usage.
• Chemistry: LFP (lithium iron phosphate) — the stable, long-cycle-life chemistry modern home storage has standardised on.
• Stackable: two units make a 23 kWh bank, three make 34.5 kWh — the same footprint, growing upward.
• Placement: floor-standing, rated for outdoor installation — garage, side wall or utility all work.
• Warranty: 10 years.

Why it's our workhorse

Value per kWh. The EP12's job is storing the most energy for the least money without cutting corners on chemistry or warranty, and it does exactly that — on a like-for-like quote it typically undercuts the premium names by a wide margin per kWh stored. Adding an EP12-class battery to one of our solar installs typically adds around £2,900–£3,000 to a panels-only price — which the overnight-tariff maths alone can justify for many homes.

The right size, once. At ~11.5 kWh you're not rationing storage. A 5 kWh battery fills by lunch and the afternoon's sun exports for pennies; the EP12 swallows the whole day, runs the evening, and still has room to buy cheap overnight power in winter (why that matters).

It grows. Start with one unit; if an EV arrives or a heat pump follows, stack a second. That upgrade path is why our largest storage designs are EP12 stacks — 23 kWh, even 34.5 kWh — rather than exotic one-off hardware.

The honest drawbacks

• It's functional, not furniture. A white floor-standing cabinet. Tidy, but nobody photographs it for Instagram the way they do a Powerwall.
• App is good, not class-leading. Fox's app covers monitoring and tariff scheduling well, but Tesla's and Sigenergy's software polish is a step ahead.
• Whole-home backup isn't its party trick. It supports backup arrangements, but if seamless whole-house power-cut cover is your top priority, that conversation usually lands on different hardware.

Who should pick something else

If your budget caps at a smaller system, a 5 kWh-class battery still beats no battery at all.

The bottom line

The EP12 is what most families are actually optimising for whether they know it or not: the most stored sunshine per pound, a warranty that outlasts the payback, and an upgrade path that doesn't punish you for starting sensibly. It's the default in our designs for a reason.
