How long do solar panels last? Longer than your mortgage.

25–30+ years for the panels — but that's not the whole system. Here's the honest lifespan of every part.

The short answer: 25–30 years or more for the panels themselves, and they don't stop dead at the end — they just fade slowly. But a solar system isn't only panels, and the honest lifespan conversation covers the inverter and battery too. Here's how it really breaks down.

Panels: slow fade, not sudden death

Solar panels have no moving parts; what ages them is weather and sunlight itself. Modern tier-1 panels degrade at a fraction of a percent per year, and manufacturers put that in writing: the panels we fit are typicallywarranted to still produce roughly 87–90% of their original output at year 25. In practice, panels from the 1990s are still quietly working today — a well-made panel's 30th birthday is unremarkable.

The inverter: the part that retires first

The inverter works hard every daylight hour, and it's electronics — realistic service life is 10–15 years, with warranties typically around 10. Budget for one inverter replacement over the system's life; it's a straightforward swap, not a re-install. This is also why we're picky about inverter brands — a cheap one is where a cheap quote hides.

Batteries: measured in cycles, warranted in years

Modern home batteries use LFP chemistry — the long-life, stable one — and carry 10-year warranties as standard. A battery cycles roughly once a day, and LFP packs are built for thousands of cycles, so a decade of daily work is what they're designed around. OurFox ESS EP12 review digs into what those warranty terms actually promise.

What the paperwork should say

  • Panel product warranty — 25 years on the tier-1 panels we fit (the physical panel, not just its output).
  • Panel performance warranty — the guaranteed output curve, ~87–90% at year 25.
  • Inverter warranty — typically 10 years.
  • Battery warranty — typically 10 years.
  • Workmanship — our installs are backed by an insurance-backed guarantee through the IWA, so the promise survives even if an installer doesn't.

How to make 30 years actually happen

Almost nothing — that's the point. No servicing schedule, no consumables. Rain does the cleaning on pitched roofs, and a once-in-a-while visual check plus keeping an eye on the app covers the rest. Ourmaintenance guide covers the few things worth doing.
