Solar panel bird proofing: how to stop pigeons nesting

Checked by our MCS-certified installers · Updated October 2026

Short answer

Pigeons nest in the warm, sheltered gap under solar panels. Mesh clipped round the edge of the array keeps them out — without drilling the panels.

We fit it on every new install, included in the price.

Signs birds are under your panels

Cooing and scratching

From the roof, often early in the morning.

Droppings

On the panels, the gutters or the path below.

Nesting material

Twigs and debris poking out from the panel edges.

Blocked gutters

Debris washed down from under the array.

How we fit it

  1. 1 Clear out any old nesting and debris from under the panels
  2. 2 Clip mesh to the panel frame edge — no drilling into the panels
  3. 3 Shape it down to the tiles on all four sides
  4. 4 Check the gutters are clear before we leave

If birds are nesting with eggs or chicks, we wait or follow the rules that protect them.

Bird proofing questions

Does mesh damage the panels?

No. The clips grip the frame edge; nothing is drilled into the panels.

Does mesh reduce how much electricity I make?

No. It sits round the edge, below the glass, so it doesn't shade the panels.

Why do pigeons choose solar panels?

The gap underneath is warm, dry and hidden from predators — an ideal nest.

Is bird proofing included in the price?

Yes. Mesh is fitted as standard on every new solar install we do, at no extra cost.
