Yes, solar panels work in winter — they run on light, not heat, and actually operate slightly more efficiently in cold temperatures. But there's less daylight, the sun sits lower, and output drops accordingly. Here's the honest seasonal picture and how a well-designed system handles it.

How much less, honestly?

A system in the South East generates roughly 3–4 times more in June than in December. As a rough shape: December–January might deliver 3–4% of annual output each, while May–July deliver 11–13% each. Design choices that improve winter output

• Panel quality — modern tier-1 panels (we fit 470–480W as standard) perform better in low light.
• Orientation — south-facing arrays hold up best in low winter sun; east-west splits still contribute morning and afternoon.
• Shading analysis — a low winter sun makes shading worse; we model it at design stage, not after installation.
